This page keeps the memory of 48 people who were executed on charges of robbery, and in particular armed robbery. The earliest execution recorded in this list took place on 2 Dey 1388 and the latest on 23 Mehr 1404. According to the sources, all 48 people were executed. The charge that appears in the title of this page is the one that the authorities or news sources announced; stating it here is no verdict of anyone's guilt. We only record that these human beings lost their lives on the gallows on this charge, and that execution, for a charge other than murder, took someone's life.
What the list shows
Those executed on this page were all adults and young. The youngest of them was 20 years old and the oldest 38, and their median age is 28 years. No adolescent under 18 is recorded in this list, and only 1 woman appears in it whose source stated that she was a woman.
These executions are seen in two cities more than anywhere else: Shiraz and Karaj, each with 15 names. After them come Isfahan with 3 names, and Sirjan, Tehran and Torkamanchay with 2 names each. Mahshahr, Behbahan, Fasa, Kerman, Hamedan and Tabriz also have one name each. Among the provinces, Fars with 16 names and Alborz with 15 names are at the top, followed by Kerman, Isfahan and East Azerbaijan with 3 names each. That means that nearly two thirds of these executions took place in the two provinces of Fars and Alborz.
The years 1390, 1392 and 1404, each with 6 names, are the years with the most names in this list, followed by 1393 and 1395 with 5 names each. In some years no name with this charge is recorded in our list; but the absence of a name does not mean the absence of an execution, it only shows that we have not found a source for it. Several days in this list have more than one execution: on 27 Farvardin 1392 four people were executed on this charge, on 12 Mordad 1393 and 23 Mehr 1404 three people each time, and on 2 Dey 1388 and 27 Ordibehesht 1390 two people each time. These recurring days are a reminder that sometimes several people were hanged together at a single dawn.
Names that have remained without a story
For none of those executed on this page do we yet have a description of their life. Apart from name, date and city, our sources have said nothing about them: we do not know their occupation, nor whether they had a spouse or children, nor how they lived before their arrest. Short execution reports usually say only who was hanged, where and on what charge. But behind each of these 48 names there was a life, with a father and mother, perhaps a spouse or children, work and hopes; lives that were never told in these reports. We list these names so that at least their names are not forgotten, and we hope that those who knew them can tell something of their lives.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
This list is not complete. The real number of people executed on charges of robbery is higher, and the names of many have never been published. We add only a name for which we have a source. The largest share of these 48 names comes from the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 39 cases; followed by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network with 9 cases and the Iran Human Rights Society with 5 cases. Haalvsh and HRANA have each reported one case. Every name has at least one source, but a number of these executions rest on only one report. If you knew one of these 48 people, share a memory, photo or correction about them with us, so that this page comes closer from a list of names to a remembrance of human beings.
