This site keeps the memory of those who, from the year 1388 until today, have been killed or executed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, and also of those who are still alive but over whom the shadow of execution hangs. Our list now holds 17,249 names. Each of these names is a human being with a home, work, a family and people who are still waiting for them. We have gathered these names so that none of them is lost in the numbers.
Whom this list includes
The largest number of these names belongs to those executed: 7955 people. 6948 people were killed in protests. 903 people were killed outside the protests and 472 others by government forces. 249 people lost their lives in custody, 2 people died after release from custody, 16 people lost their lives in suspicious circumstances and 60 people were assassinated outside Iran. And for another group no ending has yet been written: 269 people are at risk of execution, 241 people have been sentenced to death, the sentences of 52 people have been upheld and 89 people face a charge that carries the death penalty.
On this list 599 people were under 18; children and adolescents, some of whom were killed in the street and some hanged after years in prison. For 2488 people we have been able to gather something of their lives from the sources, from work and family to words that remain from them or their loved ones.
The years
No year from 1388 until today has remained without names. The year with the fewest names on this list is the year 1390, with 213 names. But a few years weigh more heavily than all others: the year 1398 with 1098 names, the year 1401 with 1612 names, the year 1403 with 943 names, and the year 1404 with 8124 names, which alone is nearly half of this entire list. The year 1405, which has not yet ended, has 562 names so far.
Ways to search
The names can be found in various ways. The event pages, from the Green Movement of the year 1388 and the protests of Aban 1398 and Flight 752, to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising in 1401, the Bloody Friday of Zahedan and the uprising of Dey 1404 (Lion and Sun Revolution), show side by side those who lost their lives in one event. The pages for year and month, province and city show whom each city and each month has lost. We have also created separate pages for children and adolescents, women, Afghan nationals, Baluch, Kurdish and Arab citizens, kolbars and fuel porters, and for students, workers, athletes, teachers and other occupations. Each person appears in a group only if a source has said so about them. For those executed, the charge given is what the authorities or the sources have stated, not a verdict of guilt.
This list is not complete
We must say it clearly: 17,249 names are not all of the victims of these years. The real number is higher. Many executions were reported without names, and the names of many of those killed were never published. We add only a name for which we have found a source; behind every name there is at least one source, but some entries rest on only one report and may contain errors in age, date or the spelling of a name. Sometimes one person appears in the sources under two names, and we try to find these duplicates and merge them.
If you knew one of these people, if you were their relative, friend, colleague or fellow prisoner, we ask you to send us a memory, a photo or a correction. If you know a name that is not on this list and have a source for it, share that with us too. With every new name and every new memory, this list becomes a little more complete; and every name that is added to it brings a human being out of oblivion.
