This page keeps the memory of the Javid-Nam (“everlasting names”), those who lost their lives, in the nationwide protests of Dey 1396. This list contains 10 names, from 15 Dey 1396 to 6 Esfand 1396. This list is small, but its composition shows something important: most of these victims died not in the street but in detention.

Fates

Of these 10 people, 7 lost their lives in detention. 2 people were killed in protests and 1 person lost their life in suspicious circumstances. All of them were adults: the youngest 20 years old and the oldest 63, with a median age of 26 years. No child under 18 is recorded in this list, and there is also no woman in it whose source stated that she was a woman. Death in detention is the main face of this page.

Days and places

The day 23 Dey 1396 with 3 names is the heaviest day in this list. The days 15, 22, 25 and 26 Dey 1396 have one name each. Sanandaj with 3 names is the most frequent city, followed by Arak and Tehran with 2 names each; Karaj and Ilam have one name each. These cities are scattered from Kurdistan to Ilam and from Markazi province to Tehran and Alborz.

In detention

Vahid Heydari, 23 years old, was a street vendor who set up his stall at the Arak bazaar. He came from a poor family and had two brothers and three sisters. A few days after his arrest, on 15 Dey 1396, he died in the detention centre of Police Station 12 in Arak. The authorities announced the cause of death as “suicide,” but according to the source there were marks of a fracture and a deep depression on his head. His family was forced to bury him the next morning in a grave that had been designated in advance.

Saro Ghahremani, 24 years old, according to the source “was a calm, modest and family-loving person.” He was engaged and had returned from Tehran to his birthplace Sanandaj to prepare for his wedding. He disappeared on 12 Dey 1396, and his body was handed over to the family on 23 Dey. His mother has been quoted as saying that there was “no bullet wound on the body,” but that “signs of bruising” could be seen. The agents did not allow a memorial service to be held in the mosque.

Mohammad Raji, 56 years old, who had returned from the war in his youth with a chemical injury to his lungs and after retirement farmed in his birthplace, was interested in wrestling and mountaineering. According to the source he was arrested in Bahman 1396 and his death occurred after the arrest; his family learned of it only on 13 Esfand, and security forces took his body secretly to the cemetery that same night. Kavous Seyed-Emami, 63 years old, whom an English-language source introduces with the two terms “sociology professor” and “environmentalist,” lost his life in suspicious circumstances on 19 Bahman 1396 in Tehran. Taleb Basati, an emergency medical services employee in Malekshahi and a medical student at Ilam University, lost his life in detention on 6 Esfand 1396; the last name in this list.
