Mashhad

This page keeps the memory of 609 people whose names are linked with Mashhad; from 21 Tir 1388 to 8 Mehr 1405. 348 of them were killed in protests and 234 were executed. 6 people lost their lives in custody and 2 people were killed by government forces. For another group, the fate is still in suspense: 8 people have been sentenced to death, 7 people face a charge that carries the death penalty, the sentences of 2 people have been upheld and 2 people are at risk of execution.

Two heavy years

Two years weigh most heavily on this page. The year 1389 with 123 names, most of them recorded on a few days: on 19 Mordad 1389, 72 people are recorded on a single day, on 19 Khordad 1389, 20 people and on 29 Azar 1389, 13 people. And the year 1404 with 373 names: on 18 Dey 1404, 104 people and on 19 Dey 1404, 68 people were killed in Mashhad. The years 1405 with 22 names, 1401 with 15 names and 1399 with 11 names come after these two.

The ages range from 8 to 74 years, and the median is 27 years. 35 of these people were under 18, and the sources have written of 34 people that they were women. 459 people are recorded in the province of Razavi Khorasan. For 81 people we have a description of life.

Those who stopped to help

Hamid Mahdavi, 38 years old, “a firefighter and well-known athlete in Mashhad,” was hit by a bullet in the throat on the evening of 18 Dey 1404 while helping the wounded. A video of him remains in which he carries the wounded Jafar Javidi on his shoulders. Jafar Javidi, 29 years old, had himself “come to the site of the protests with first-aid medical equipment to treat the wounded”; he had earlier been arrested in 1401 and sentenced to 37 months in prison. This sentence of his remains: “If we don't go, who should go?” Morteza Ezhdari Goush, 38 years old, a tailor who had lost his job and “father of two children aged 13 and 10, and a tenant,” was killed on Tabarsi Boulevard while helping his friend who had been shot.

The adolescents of Mashhad

Abolfazl Nowrouzi Anbarkeh, 14 years old, had been working since Khordad in a repair shop for heavy vehicles in order to buy a motorcycle; on 18 Dey 1404 he was killed by a shot to the head. Parham Mehrabi, 19 years old, “a calm, kind and well-loved adolescent,” “was killed in his father's arms” next to the Haft-e Tir bridge. His father had told him: “Don't go, I'll buy you a PlayStation 5.” Abolfazl Adinehzadeh, 16 years old, an electronics student, was killed by pellets on 16 Mehr 1401 in front of Ferdowsi University. He had said: “I want people to be happy; the joy after freedom, when everyone dances happily.”

Others

Javad Zabet Laghaei, 35 years old, was a baker and was to go and ask for a hand in marriage two days later. Abbasali Ramezani, 74 years old, a political prisoner of the 60s (Iranian calendar), was hit by a bullet in Vakilabad Street while wearing an electronic ankle tag. Arash Tolou Sheikhzadeh, 35 years old, a barista, was arrested on 17 Bahman and lost his life in custody.

Majidreza Rahnavard Paeindeh, 23 years old, a worker at a fruit shop, was executed in public with a crane on 21 Azar 1401, 13 days after the first court session. He had asked: “(At my grave) let them rejoice! Let them play happy music!” Ebrahim Hajati, who had been arrested at the age of 16, was executed on 31 Farvardin 1393 at the age of 20 in Vakilabad Prison. The charges are what the authorities stated, not a verdict of guilt.
