This page keeps the memory of those who were killed outside Iran's borders and whose killing a court or a government has attributed to the Islamic Republic. This list contains only 3 names. According to the sources, all three were assassinated outside Iran. The first date on this page is 24 Azar 1394, the second 17 Aban 1396 and the third 23 Aban 1398; that is, one name from each of the years 1394, 1396 and 1398.
The criterion of this page
This page differs from the other pages of our list. We include someone here when a court or a government has attributed their killing to the Islamic Republic. Rumour, suspicion or an unsupported claim is not enough to be included on this page. For this reason this page is very short: many suspicious deaths outside Iran never reached such a judgement, and we do not list them here. The small number on this page reflects the strictness of this criterion, not the real number of people who lost their lives outside Iran.
What we do not know
About these three people our data is very scant. In the sources that recorded these names, the age of none of them is given, and no city or province in Iran has been recorded for them, because their deaths occurred outside Iran. None of them is recorded in our sources as a woman or a child under 18. For none of these three people do we have a description of their life, occupation or family, or any words from their relatives. This lack does not mean that their lives were of little importance; it only shows that the sources we have had access to have recorded nothing beyond name and date.
The three dates on this page, 24 Azar 1394, 17 Aban 1396 and 23 Aban 1398, each hold one name. Behind each of these dates is a human being who was killed outside Iran. We list these names alongside the names of those who were executed or killed in Iran, because a court or a government has attributed these killings to the Islamic Republic.
The place of these names in the list
Because no city or province in Iran has been recorded for these three people, no city or province in our list is tied to their names; their memory is bound to the date of their death and to this page. The fate we have recorded for them is also different from the others: not execution, not being killed in a protest, but “was assassinated outside Iran.” We have deliberately kept this category separate so that it is clear that these deaths occurred beyond the borders and that the criterion for their inclusion is the judgement of a court or a government.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
This list is not complete. There may be others who were killed outside Iran whose deaths have been attributed to the Islamic Republic by a court ruling or a government statement, and for whom we have not yet found a source. All three names on this page come from English Wikipedia, and 2 names are also recorded in Persian Wikipedia; so this page relies more than any other page on secondary sources, and we are trying to find other sources for it as well. Every name has at least one source, but none of them yet has a description of life.
If you knew one of these three people, know something about their life, work, family or legacy, or know of someone else who was killed outside Iran and whose killing a court or government has attributed to the Islamic Republic, share it with us. Every memory can turn these names from a simple date into the remembrance of a human being.
