Azar 1404

This page keeps the memory of 312 people who gave their lives in Azar 1404 or whose fate was decided in this month; from 1 Azar 1404 to 30 Azar 1404. Azar 1404, one month before the Dey uprising, is in this list a month of gallows: 301 people were executed in this month. 3 people lost their lives in custody and one person was killed outside the protests. 4 people were sentenced to death, the sentence of one person was upheld and 2 people are at risk of execution.

Days with many names

Two days of this month have 24 names each: 12 Azar 1404 and 26 Azar 1404. After them come 11 Azar 1404 with 19 names, 5 Azar 1404 with 17 and 2 Azar 1404 with 14 names. That is, in this month almost every day someone was executed somewhere in the country.

The executions are spread over many cities: Ahvaz with 8 names, Aligudarz with 7, Gorgan with 6, and Sabzevar, Birjand, Dezful, Semnan, Ilam, Ardabil, Rasht, Saveh and Hamadan with 5 names each. Among the provinces, Razavi Khorasan and Khuzestan with 21 names each and Lorestan with 15 are in the lead. The ages range from 17 to 55 years, and the median is 37 years. One person under 18 is recorded, and the sources have written of 9 people that they were women.

Rana Farajoghli

On 12 Azar 1404, one of the days with the most names this month, Rana Farajoghli, 24 years old, was executed in Tabriz Central Prison. The source writes that her father “had locked her in a room for 2 days and nights” so that she would submit to a marriage that was forced on her at the age of 16, to a man 19 years older. She said in court that after that incident she “felt she had been freed from a life like death.” The charge attributed to her is the court's account, not proof of guilt.

Dariush Atashafrouz

Dariush Atashafrouz, who is recorded in our list as 17 years old, has had his death sentence upheld. The source writes that he “at the age of 17 had gone to the mountains around a village in Khuzestan to collect honey,” and at that same age was arrested in connection with a killing and sentenced to death. According to the source, he “was transferred to solitary confinement about two weeks ago for the execution of the sentence.” We do not know his fate today.

Fathers

Mehrdad Pourhosseini, who “had a 13-year-old daughter,” was executed at dawn on 5 Azar 1404 in Lakan Prison in Rasht; his family had gathered in front of the prison. On the same day, Bahman Salehi, 30 years old, “father of a young child,” was executed in Aligudarz, and Abdolrahman Nahtani, 50 years old, “with four children,” in Shiraz. Abdollah Barahouei, 39 years old, and Mehrdad Espid, 38 years old, were both executed on 10 Azar, and both “were married and had two children.” Keyvan Shahbakhsh, 30 years old, was hanged on 12 Azar in Bam, Ramezan Deldadeh, 42 years old, on 18 Azar in Birjand and Heydar Amiri, 32 years old, on 24 Azar in Sabzevar.

Sources and incompleteness

312 names are not all of those who were executed in Azar 1404; the real number is higher, and from many executions no name has come out. We record only names that have a source. The sources of this page are the Iran Human Rights Society with 250 cases, HRANA with 209, Haalvsh with 19, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network with 6, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 2, and the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (English-language) and iranintl.com with one case each. We have details for only 18 people. If you knew one of these 312 people, send us your memory or correction.
