Women killed

This page keeps the memory of women who were executed, killed in protests or lost their lives in detention. This list contains 1056 women, from 11 Ordibehesht 1388 to 8 Mehr 1405. Before anything else it must be said: we include a woman on this page when her source has explicitly stated that she was a woman. In many short execution reports gender is not mentioned; so there are other women in our overall list who are not seen here, and the number of women who lost their lives is undoubtedly higher than this.

Fates

Most of these women, 821 people, were executed. 198 women were killed in protests, 16 women lost their lives in detention, 11 women were killed by government forces outside of protests and 4 women in other circumstances. 3 women were assassinated outside Iran, 2 women lost their lives in suspicious circumstances and 1 woman died after being released from detention. 40 people in this list were girls under 18 years of age. The median age is 33 years and the oldest woman in this list was 72 years old; the lowest age given in the data is 3 years.

Before 1401 the number of women in each year of this list is small, but after that it rises: 231 women in 1401, 191 women in 1402, 195 women in 1403 and 298 women in 1404. Two days are heavier than all others: 18 Dey 1404 with 48 names and 19 Dey 1404 with 43 names. Karaj with 91 names is the most frequent city, followed by Tehran with 72, Urmia with 55, Shiraz with 53, Zahedan with 40 and Isfahan with 39 names. Alborz with 97 names and Tehran with 87 names are at the top of the provinces.

One of those close to her asked: “I wanted to know what my daughter's sin was, that she protested with empty hands and you riddled her body with bullets?”

Sarina Saedi, 16 years old, a ninth-grade student in Sanandaj, dreamed of becoming a doctor or a university professor. This sentence of hers remains: “I want to become a useful person for myself, my family and my society.” She lost her life in Aban 1401 from a baton blow to the head. Nika Shakarami, 17 years old, worked in a coffee shop near Enghelab Square; the source says “her dream was to live in a country where she could be free.” Her body was found in the morgue of Kahrizak after days without news.

About this list

The list of women who lost their lives is not complete; the real number is higher, and the names of many women were never published. We record only a name that has a source. The largest share of the names on this page comes from the Iran Human Rights Society with 878 cases; followed by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network with 278, Haalvsh with 217, HRANA with 198, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 158 and iranhrs.org with 116 cases. Every name has at least one source, but some only one. For 309 women a description of their life is available. If you knew one of these 1056 women, or know a woman who should be on this page, send us your memory or correction.
