Killed in the Khuzestan water protests (July 2021)

Protests against water shortage in Khuzestan

7 names7 Killed during protests0 under 180 with a life story

This page keeps the memory of the Javid-Nam (“everlasting names”), those who lost their lives, in the water protests of Khuzestan; protests that rose up in Tir 1400 against the lack of water in Khuzestan. This list contains 7 names, and all seven were killed in protests. The earliest date in this list is 25 Tir 1400 and the latest 6 Mordad 1400; that is, all of these deaths occurred within less than two weeks.

Day by day

The dates of death of these seven people are as follows: 1 person on 25 Tir 1400, 2 people on 26 Tir, 2 people on 29 Tir, 1 person on 31 Tir and 1 person on 6 Mordad 1400. The days 26 and 29 Tir, each with two names, are the heaviest days on this page; on each of these two days two families were bereaved on a single day. Behind each of these dates is a family that lost a loved one in a summer without water.

One fate

Only one fate is recorded on this page: being killed in a protest. None of these seven people is in our list as executed or as having lost their life in detention, and no name of anyone who came to be at risk of execution after these protests appears on this page. All seven lost their lives in those same days of protest, from 25 Tir to 6 Mordad 1400. Of these, 6 people were killed in the month of Tir and 1 person in Mordad.

What we do not know

Our data about these seven people is very scant, and we want to say this plainly. In the sources that recorded these names, the age of none of them is given; we do not know whether they were young or middle-aged, and we cannot say whether there was a child among them. The city and province where they were killed have also not been recorded in the data for this page, although the title of this event itself points to Khuzestan. None of them is recorded in our sources as a woman. For none of these seven people do we have a description of their life: no occupation, no family, no words from relatives.

This lack must not be confused with these deaths being of little importance. Each of these seven names is a human being who came into the street for water, or was beside those who had come into the street for water, and never returned home. To this day this page is only a list of names and dates, and we hope that one day we can also bring something of the life of each of them here.

Sources

All seven names on this page come from the Persian Wikipedia article titled “Iran protests of summer 1400.” Therefore all of these names rest, to this day, on only one source, and that source is itself a secondary source. We are trying to find other sources for each of these names, and if age, city or other details about them are found in a new source, we will add them to this page, citing the source.

This list is not complete

The list of the Javid-Nam in the Khuzestan water protests of Tir 1400 is not complete. The real number of those killed in those days may be higher, and the names of some may never have been published. We record only a name for which we have a source. If you knew one of these seven people, if you know how old they were, in which city they lived or what work they did, or if you know of another person who lost their life in the Khuzestan water protests, share it with us. Every memory that reaches us brings one of these seven names closer from a date to the remembrance of a human being.
