This page keeps the memory of 28 people who gave their lives in Chalus, in the province of Mazandaran. 27 of them were killed in protests and one person was killed by government forces outside the protests. All the dates that are known on this page fall within three days: from 17 Dey 1404 to 19 Dey 1404. All 28 names belong to the year 1404, but for some the sources have not written the exact day.
Three days in Chalus
On 17 Dey 1404 one person was killed. The next day, 18 Dey 1404, 12 people gave their lives, and on 19 Dey 1404, 5 more. The sources mention Doustgar Street in Chalus as one of the places where agents fired at the protesters. The ages range from 17 to 56 years, and the median is 35 years. One person was under 18. The sources have not written of any of these 28 people that they were a woman.
Majid Farnia
Majid Farnia, 46 years old, was originally from Yazd and lived in Chalus. Before going out, he had said in a video: “I'm going out, not for myself, for our sons... For freedom one must give one's life.” He was killed on 18 Dey 1404 in Chalus.
The story of this family did not end with his death. According to the source, his 23-year-old son, Amir Farnia, was arrested months later, on the morning of the seventh of Mehr, at his workplace in Kelardasht. A father who had said he was going out for his sons was killed, and his son went to prison.
Mohammad Karimi Parmehr
Mohammad Karimi Parmehr, 47 years old, according to the source “was the father of two children, a 17-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son.” On the evening of 19 Dey 1404, agents shot him in the area of Doustgar Street. The source writes: “In all, five bullets struck his body, one in the shoulder blade and four others around the chest.” Other signs of injury were also seen on his head and chest, and his family still do not know what caused them. He was buried on the evening of 20 Dey under severe restrictions.
Afshin Mayar Kiani and Amirali Darabi
Afshin Mayar Kiani, according to the source, was “one of the well-known taekwondo athletes” and was also a coach. On 18 Dey 1404 he was killed while helping wounded protesters. The source writes: “When the repressive forces noticed his efforts to save others, they fired two bullets at him from behind, and he lost his life on the spot.” His age is not recorded in our sources.
Amirali Darabi, 17 years old, the only adolescent on this page, was a boxer. He was killed on the same day, 18 Dey 1404, in the protests in Chalus by a direct shot. The source reports “the large presence of people at the fortieth-day ceremony of Amirali Darabi”; people who, despite everything, gathered for their adolescent.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
These 28 names are not all of those killed in Chalus. The real number is higher, and the names of many of those who gave their lives in those three days have not yet been published; Chalus appears in our list only with names that have a source. The sources of this page are HRANA / Human Rights Activists in Iran with 26 cases, Iran International and iranhrs.org with 19 cases each, Persian Wikipedia with 6 cases, the Iran Human Rights Society with 5 cases, Iran International, IranWire and Hengaw with 3 cases each, and www.iranintl.com and iranintl.com with 2 cases each. We have a description of life for only 5 people, and some entries have only one source.
If you knew one of these 28 people, send us your memory or correction.
