This page keeps the memory of 34 people of Javanrud, a city in the province of Kermanshah whose name in this list is tied to only two autumns. All the names from Javanrud go back to two years: 21 names to the year 1398 and 13 names to the year 1401. The first date on this page is 25 Aban 1398 and the last 10 Dey 1401. Of these 34 people, 33 were killed in protests and one person lost their life in custody. No execution is recorded in the list for Javanrud; this city has given its dead in the street.
Two Abans
In Aban 1398, two consecutive days were heavy for Javanrud: 6 people were killed on 25 Aban 1398 and 3 people on 26 Aban 1398. Three years later, again in Aban, this city saw fresh grief: 4 people on 29 Aban 1401 and 6 people on 30 Aban 1401. That is, on only four days of two years, more than half of all the names on this page were lost. Earlier in that same year 1401, on 9 Mehr 1401, one person from Javanrud had also been killed.
Those whose age we know were between 16 and 45 years old, and the median age is 24 years. That is, most of those killed in Javanrud were young people who had not yet reached the age of thirty. One person on this list was under 18; an adolescent who should be remembered separately on this page. The sources have also clearly written of one person that she was a woman.
Erfan Kakaei and Loghman Kakaei
On 29 Aban 1401, a family in Javanrud lost a father and a son together. Erfan Kakaei was 45 years old, and the source introduces him as a teacher: “Erfan Kakaei, a teacher, was killed on 29 Aban during the popular protests in Javanrud by the shooting of IRGC forces.” Another source has added about him: “On the same day his son was also killed.”
That son was Loghman Kakaei. His age is not recorded in the source we have. For both of them, the source has written the cause of death as follows: “as a result of the shooting of security agents.” A teacher who had taught the children of this city for years, and his son, left home on one day and did not return. In two rows of this list, one home has been left empty. If a pupil from Erfan Kakaei's class or one of Loghman's friends reads this page, a memory of the two of them is valuable to us.
What we still do not know
Compared with the number of its names, the list for Javanrud has very few descriptions of life. We have found details of life in the sources for only 4 of these 34 people, and for most of them we have nothing but a name, a date and sometimes an age. We do not know which of them was a worker and which a student, who had children and who had only just begun married life. This very emptiness is itself part of the reality of this page: many of those killed in small towns are, even in the reports, only a short name.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
These 34 names are not all of those from Javanrud who lost their lives. The real number is higher and the names of many were never published; we record only a name for which we have found a source. The largest share is held by Persian Wikipedia with 32 cases. After it come Radio Zamaneh with 18 cases, IranWire with 17 cases, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network and the Iran Human Rights Society with 14 cases each, iranhrs.org with 10 cases, the Campaign for the Defence of Political and Civil Prisoners and the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (English-language) with 9 cases each and the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 6 cases. Behind every name there is at least one source, but some entries rest on only one source and may contain errors in age or date.
If you knew one of these 34 people, if you were in the streets of Javanrud in Aban 1398 or Aban 1401, we ask you to send us a memory, a photo or a correction so that these names may have faces again.
