This page keeps the memory of 29 people of Khomeinishahr in the province of Isfahan. 24 of them were killed in protests and 5 were executed. The first date recorded on this page is 11 Esfand 1389 and the last 20 Dey 1404. Khomeinishahr, which in the sources sometimes also appears under the name Sedeh, is in this list more a city of those killed in the street than a city of executions.
What we know from the dates
Of these 29 names, one name belongs to the year 1389, 4 names to the year 1390, 3 names to the year 1396 and 21 names to the year 1404; that is, most of those from Khomeinishahr who lost their lives were taken in that one year. For many of the names from the year 1404, the sources give only the year and not the exact day. The day 20 Mehr 1390, with 4 names, has the highest number in a single day; all the names of that year come from this one day. In Dey 1404, three consecutive days appear on this list: one name on 18 Dey 1404, 2 names on 19 Dey 1404 and 2 names on 20 Dey 1404.
Those whose age we know were between 18 and 63 years old, but the median age is 24 years; that is, most of those killed in Khomeinishahr were young people at the beginning of their path. On this page neither an adolescent under 18 is recorded nor a woman whose being a woman a source has stated explicitly. This does not mean that there were none; it only means that we have not yet found a source for them.
Mohammad Jafarpour
The only name on this page with a description of life is Mohammad Jafarpour. He was 22 years old, and the source introduces him as “a student of the 1402 intake of the master's programme in computer engineering at the Iran University of Science and Technology.” A young man who had reached a master's programme at 22, that is, who had studied for years and built a future for himself. According to the source, he “was killed on the evening of 19 Dey in Khomeinishahr (Sedeh), Isfahan, by the shooting of agents.” The date our list has recorded for his death is 20 Dey 1404; probably the day he lost his life or the day the news of it was recorded.
A sentence from one of those close to him remains, which shows the grief of this home better than any explanation: “I brought you the same clothes I thought you would wear this year too, and the same chain I was supposed to see on your shoulders.” This sentence is from someone who had prepared clothes and a chain for Mohammad to spend a happy day with him, and who took them to his grave.
Twenty-eight other names
For the other twenty-eight people on this page, the sources have said nothing but a name, a date and sometimes an age. We do not know who the four people were who gave their lives on 20 Mehr 1390, what work they did and who was left behind them. We do not know whether those who were killed in Dey 1404 alongside Mohammad Jafarpour in the streets of this city were his neighbours or had never seen him. Each of these rows is waiting for someone who can say who this person was.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
These 29 names are not all of those from Khomeinishahr who lost their lives. The real number is higher and the names of many were never published; we record only a name for which we have found a source. The largest share is held by HRANA / Human Rights Activists in Iran with 20 cases. After it come Iran International with 8 cases, iranhrs.org with 7 cases, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 6 cases, Persian Wikipedia with 4 cases, Iran International with 2 cases, and www.iranintl.com, iranintl.com and RFE/RL with one case each. Each of the 29 names from Khomeinishahr has at least one source, but several entries rest on only one report, and details such as the age or the day of death may be incorrect in them.
If you knew one of these 29 people, if you grew up in Sedeh and a name on this page is familiar to you, we ask you to send us a memory, a photo or a correction.
