This page keeps the memory of 82 people whose names are linked with Mahshahr, in the province of Khuzestan. 64 of them were killed in protests, 17 were executed and one person has been sentenced to death. The first date on this page is 24 Farvardin 1389 and the last 17 Khordad 1405. But in this list Mahshahr is known above all by Aban 1398: 56 names, that is, two thirds of this page, belong to that year.
The ages given in the sources range from 15 to 52; the youngest was still a teenager.
Aban 1398
Two days weigh most heavily on this list: 27 Aban 1398 with 18 killed and 26 Aban 1398 with 9 killed. For many others of the 56 names of that year, the sources have not recorded the exact day of death. The large number of sources that have reported these names, from Persian Wikipedia to Amnesty International, Radio Zamaneh, IranWire and Al Arabiya Farsi, shows that the news of those killed in Mahshahr came out in those days by various routes.
After that, the year 1404, with 21 names, is the second year of this page; 2 people were killed on 18 Dey 1404. The other years have one name each: 1389, 1390, 1401, 1402 and 1405.
Ages
Those whose age we know were between 15 and 52 years old, and the median age is only 25 years. That is, most of those killed in Mahshahr were young people in the middle of their twenties. 2 of these 82 people were under 18. The sources have not written of any of these people that they were a woman.
Ebrahim Mavaddatzadeh (Osmani)
Among the 82 names from Mahshahr, our sources have recorded details of life for only two people, and one of them is Ebrahim Mavaddatzadeh (Osmani). The source writes about him only: “married, father of two children.” He was executed on 17 Khordad 1405; the last name on this page. His age does not appear in our sources. The charge attributed to him is what the authorities stated, not a verdict of guilt.
His two children have been without a father since that day. This one short sentence is all that has reached us of the life of a man who was executed sixteen years after the first date on this page.
What we still do not know
For the dozens of people who were killed in Mahshahr in Aban 1398, our sources have recorded nothing but a name and sometimes an age. We do not know which of them was a worker, which a school student, who was a father and who had just come back from military service. We do not know whom the 17 people executed in this city, who were hanged in various years, left behind. This page, with all its names, is still more a list than a story.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
These 82 names are not all of those from Mahshahr who lost their lives. The real number is higher, and especially from Aban 1398 the names of many were never published; for Mahshahr, too, we have recorded only names that have a source. The sources of this page are Persian Wikipedia with 49 cases, Amnesty International with 27, Radio Zamaneh with 23, IranWire with 22, HRANA with 14, Al Arabiya Farsi with 12, the Iran Human Rights Society with 9, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 5, and the Begoonah news network and HRANA / Human Rights Activists in Iran with 4 cases each. Some entries rest on only one source and may contain errors in the spelling of a name or in an age.
If you knew one of these 82 people, if you were in Mahshahr in Aban 1398 or are from the family of one of them, we ask you to send us a memory, a photo or a correction so that this page may move from a list to a story.
