This page keeps the memory of 23 people of Marivan, in the province of Kurdistan. 13 of them were killed in protests, 9 were killed by government forces outside the protests and one person was executed. The first date on this page is 17 Mehr 1393 and the last 6 Mordad 1404. The share of those who were killed outside any protest is very large in this short list: nearly two out of every five people.
Years and days
The year 1398, with 9 names, is the year with the most names on this page, and 5 of them were killed on a single day, 25 Aban 1398. In the same autumn, one person on 27 Aban 1398 and one person on 24 Azar 1398 gave their lives. After that, the names appear in consecutive years: 3 names in 1401, including one person on 8 Mehr 1401, 2 names in 1402, 3 names in 1403 and 5 names in 1404. One name also belongs to the year 1393; the first name on this page.
The ages range from 17 to 36 years, and the median is 31 years. One person was under 18. The sources have not written of any of these 23 people that they were a woman.
Mehran Tak
Mehran Tak, 31 years old, was a driver, and the source writes about his family: “married, father of one child.” He was killed in Aban 1398; according to the source, “during the protests against the rise in the price of petrol that began on Friday, 24 Aban 1398, in a large number of Iranian cities.” After his death, according to the source, “the security forces did not allow the ritual washing of the body to be held at the mosque.” The child who lost a father that autumn is now several years older and knows his or her father only from the memories of others.
Sivan Dastafkan and Arman Raizan
Sivan Dastafkan, 31 years old, was killed by government forces outside the protests on 29 Farvardin 1403. The source writes about him only: “father of one child.” Arman Raizan, also 31 years old, lost his life in the same way on 20 Ordibehesht 1404; the source writes: “father of 2 children.”
These two men, who were killed in Marivan about a year apart, appear in our sources only with their name, age and number of children. We do not know what work they did and how they were killed; we know only that they were not at any protest and that three children were left fatherless by the two of them. 9 people of Marivan on this list have such a fate.
What we do not know
For the 20 other people on this page, our sources have recorded nothing but a name, a date and sometimes an age. We do not know who the five people were who were killed on 25 Aban 1398, and about the only person executed on this page, too, we know nothing but a name. The charge attributed to him or her is what the authorities stated, not a verdict of guilt.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
These 23 names are not all of those from Marivan who lost their lives. The real number is higher, and many killings, especially outside the protests, were never reported with a name; Marivan appears in our list only with names that a source has recorded. The largest share is held by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network with 22 cases, followed by IranWire with 16 cases, Persian Wikipedia with 12 cases, Radio Zamaneh and the Iran Human Rights Society with 6 cases each, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center and Amnesty International with 5 cases each, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (English-language) with 3 cases, and Radio Farda and Iran International with 2 cases each. Some entries have only one source.
If you knew one of these 23 people, send us your memory or correction.
