The list for Qom is above all a list of executions: 96 of these people were hanged. 7 people were killed in protests, 2 people lost their lives in custody and one person is at risk of execution. Years and days
The year 1404, with 57 names, is more than half of this page, and the year 1401, with 14 names, comes after it. The year 1399 has seven names and the years 1400 and 1402 have 5 names each. From more distant years only a few names remain: one in 1388, one in 1395, three in 1396, two in 1397 and three in 1398. The days 23 Mordad 1396, 14 Mordad 1399, 18 Tir 1401, 31 Tir 1401 and 4 Khordad 1404 have three executions each.
The ages range from 17 to 56 years, and the median is 30 years. One person was under 18 at the time of death, and the sources have written of 14 people that they were women. As you will read below, at least one other person who was executed had also been arrested as a child.
Esfand 1404: three young men
Saleh Mohammadi, 19 years old, “a young, medal-winning wrestler,” “was born on 20 Esfand 1385.” In Shahrivar 1403, wearing the singlet of the national freestyle wrestling team, he had won the bronze medal of the Saitiev international cup. According to the source, “Mohammadi denied the murder charge and said the confessions were obtained under pressure,” and those close to him say that at the time of the incident he was at his uncle's house, but the court did not summon the witnesses. On 28 Esfand 1404, eight days after his 19th birthday, he was executed together with Saeed Davoudi and Mehdi Ghasemi. Saeed Davoudi, 21 years old, son of Ramezan, was to “turn 22 on the first of Farvardin 1405.” Mehdi Ghasemi, son of Asghar, according to the source “appears to be a young man of about 20.” All three had been charged with “the murder of two police officers”; this is a charge the authorities stated, not a verdict of their guilt.
Abolfazl Chezani Sharahi
Abolfazl Chezani Sharahi, 18 years old, the son of a poor family on the outskirts of Qom with four brothers, studied up to the second year of middle school and then worked in a sohan (Qom brittle) bakery. The source writes: “During his school years he mostly played football or went to the Atari club.” He was executed on 6 Tir 1397 in Langarud Prison in Qom. One of those who have remembered him has said: “Abolfazl did not deserve execution; we would have been satisfied if they had imprisoned him for life, but execution for a 14-year-old child is far from humanity.”
Others
Saeed Shokri, 26 years old, an estate agent, unmarried and “without a criminal record,” was executed at 6 in the morning on 25 Bahman 1395 together with 6 others in Langarud Prison; the day before, he had seen his family for the last time. Hossein Rabiei, 37 years old, was killed in the protests on 12 Dey 1404; in front of his workplace he always put out a cooler of ice water with a “Khodanour” label. The provincial authorities said he was killed by a grenade he himself was carrying. Mojtaba Ayami, 47 years old, “father of one child,” was executed on 30 Azar 1402.
Sources and incompleteness
106 names are not all of those who were executed or killed in Qom; the real number is higher, and from many executions in Langarud Prison no name has come out. We record no name without a source. The main sources are the Iran Human Rights Society with 49 cases, HRANA with 34, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 30, iranintl.com and Iran International with 10 each, Iran International with 7, Haalvsh with 6, and Radio Farda, Wikipedia and VOA Persian with 5 cases each. If you knew one of these 106 people, send us your memory or correction.
