This page keeps the memory of 23 people who gave their lives in Shahroud. 14 of them were executed and 9 were killed in protests. The first date on this page is 21 Shahrivar 1390 and the last 10 Mordad 1405. 22 of these people are recorded in the province of Semnan and one person in the province of Razavi Khorasan.
Two periods
The names from Shahroud are gathered in two periods. First the years of the nineties (in the Iranian calendar): 2 names in 1390, both from 21 Shahrivar 1390, one name in 1391, on 20 Shahrivar, and 3 names in 1395, two of which go back to 1 Mehr 1395. Then the year 1404 with 14 names, and the day 19 Dey 1404, with 7 killed, the bitterest day of this page. The year 1405 also has 3 names so far, and on 26 Khordad 1405 two people were executed in Shahroud Prison.
The ages range from 19 to 51 years, and the median is 32 years. The sources have written of 3 people that they were women. No one under 18 is recorded on this page, but Hossein Arab Ahmadi, who was executed on 1 Mehr 1395 in Shahroud Prison, according to the source “was 18 years old at the time of the crime.”
19 Dey 1404
Soleyman Nowrouzi, 33 years old, was killed in front of the governor's office. The source writes that he “was married and had a two-year-old daughter who was very attached to him,” and now that daughter hugs her father's picture frame at night and falls asleep. Amirhossein Shadabi, 20 years old, was a conscript soldier, “was serving the last part of his compulsory service” and was a young player of the Kia football academy. He was killed in 17 Shahrivar Street. Saeed Golsorkhi, 31 years old, a powerlifter and owner of a clothing shop, was hit by a bullet in the knee on the same day and lost his life on 22 Dey 1404; after his death his brother Navid was also arrested. Matin Montazerzohour, 32 years old, who was active in bodybuilding, had come to Shahroud from Gorgan and was killed by a bullet to the heart.
Abolfazl Saedi and Arvin Kheirkhahan
Abolfazl Saedi, 24 years old, was the only child of a teacher mother who had raised him alone. “Abolfazl had been the breadwinner of the house from a young age,” and he helped children who had dropped out of school. The source writes that he “had a smile on his lips until the last moment before the execution.” He was executed in Khordad 1405 in Shahroud Prison. His mother, holding his body in her arms, said: “Abolfazl, get up, let's go home.”
Arvin Kheirkhahan, 19 years old, was executed on 10 Mordad 1405; “only six months remained until his twentieth birthday.” His family were told to come at three in the morning to receive the body and to hold the burial at five in the morning. The charges in the cases of those executed are what the authorities stated, not a verdict of guilt.
Sources and incompleteness
These 23 names are not all of those from Shahroud who lost their lives; the real number is higher, and of many executions in this city only a few lines remain. We record no name without a source. The main sources are Iran International with 12 cases, the Iran Human Rights Society and iranintl.com with 9 each, HRANA with 8 and 5, Iran International with 8, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 6, IranWire with 5, and Kayhan London and Wikipedia with 3 cases each. For 8 people on this page we have a description of life, and some entries rest on only one report, so an age or a date may be incorrect. If you knew one of these 23 people, if you were a fellow prisoner of one of those executed in Shahroud Prison, or if you were in the streets of this city in Dey 1404, we ask you to send us your memory or correction so that this page may become more complete.
