This page keeps the memory of 51 people of Bukan, a city in the province of West Azerbaijan. The list begins on 5 Azar 1388 and continues until 8 Tir 1405. More than half of these names, 26 names, go back to the year 1401, and 17 other names to the year 1404. In this list Bukan is a city that passed through the autumn of 1401 in blood and after that, too, saw fresh grief.
Autumn 1401 in Bukan
26 of these 51 people were killed in protests. The day 26 Aban 1401, with 8 killed, is the bitterest day of this page. The days before and after it are not empty either: 3 names on 25 Aban 1401 and 3 names on 27 Aban 1401. Before that, on 20 Mehr 1401, 2 people were killed, and after that, on 2 Azar 1401, 2 more. That is, in less than two months a large part of the names of this city were recorded.
Apart from those killed in protests, 16 people were executed, 5 people lost their lives in custody and one person was killed by government forces outside the protests. The death sentences of 2 people have been upheld, and one more person is at risk of execution. The ages range from 7 years to 57 years, and the median is 29 years. One person on this list was under 18, and the sources have written of 4 people that they were women. The other names are scattered: one in 1388, one in 1395, two in 1398, one in 1400 and one in 1405.
Shahriar Mohammadi
Shahriar Mohammadi, 28 years old, was killed on 27 Aban 1401. He studied architecture at the Islamic Azad University of Bukan, but according to the source he “gave up continuing his studies because of his family's financial problems” and worked with his private car. The source says he “was an athlete; he had practised martial arts and had also earned a certificate in this discipline,” and “from a young age he believed in freedom and the equality of women and men.” According to the source, he was stopped in a dead-end alley next to Aliabad Square and riddled with gunfire. When his brother Milad was holding his body in his arms, one of the agents shot him in the shin with a pellet gun. This sentence of Shahriar's remains: “We are one Iranian and we remain one Iranian, and hail to the honour of the whole country of Iran!”
Saadi Shahrokhifar and Kamal Feghhi
Saadi Shahrokhifar was 40 years old and “the father of two young children.” The source writes that at dawn on 28 Aban he “left the house to go shopping” and was killed in Aliabad Street in Bukan by a bullet to the chest and several stab wounds. The date the list has recorded for him is 2 Azar 1401.
Kamal Feghhi, 46 years old, according to the source, “was an employee of the Bonab thermal power plant.” He was killed on 20 Mehr 1401; the source says the security forces targeted him with direct fire “on the roof of his house” in the Hesar district of Bukan. He is one of the two names this day has in the list for Bukan.
About the sources of this page
These 51 names are not all of those from Bukan who lost their lives. The real number is higher and the names of many were never published; we record only a name for which we have found a source. The largest share is held by the Iran Human Rights Society with 39 cases, followed by Persian Wikipedia with 23 cases, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network with 22 cases, iranhrs.org and the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (English-language) with 20 cases each, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center and HRANA with 15 cases each, Hengaw with 4 cases and the Kurdpa news agency with 3 cases. We have a description of life for only 5 people, and some names rest on only one source.
If you knew one of these people of Bukan, if you were in the alleys of this city in the autumn of 1401 or have news of the fate of those whose sentences have been upheld, we ask you to send us your memory or correction.
