This page keeps the memory of 35 people whose names are linked with Najafabad, in the province of Isfahan. 34 of them were killed in protests and one person was executed. The first date on this page is 24 Mordad 1398 and the last 11 Mehr 1405. But most of these names belong to two nights: 18 Dey 1404 with 15 killed and 19 Dey 1404 with 8 killed.
Two nights in Najafabad
The year 1404, with 31 names, makes up almost all of this page. From the year 1398 three names appear: one on 24 Mordad, one on 25 Aban and one on 26 Aban 1398. One name also belongs to 1405. In the sources, Police Station 12 in Najafabad, Mirdamad Street and the Basij building in Yazdanshahr appear again and again alongside the names of those killed. The ages range from 13 to 43 years, and the median is 30 years. 2 people were under 18; the youngest of them 13 years old. The sources have not written of any of them that they were a woman.
Firefighters and helpers
Several of those killed in Najafabad gave their lives while helping others. Mohammad Goli, 43 years old, was a firefighter. The source writes that he “drove the fire engine towards the entrance gate to create a barrier between the armed forces and the people.” On 18 Dey 1404 he was targeted with direct fire in front of Police Station 12; “more than 11 bullets struck his body and he lost his life on the spot.” Amirhossein Zeynali, 26 years old, a conscript soldier, was killed the same night and in the same place when he had gone to help a wounded woman.
Hossein Radi Najafabadi, 24 years old, was “a diver and firefighter” and on his Instagram “wrote about the unknown beauties of the sea.” A few months earlier he had gone to Armenia for work. On 19 Dey in Mirdamad Street, while he was trying to take several people away from the scene of the clashes, two military bullets struck his chest. His body was secretly taken, and for a while his family were told that he was alive and in custody.
Fathers
Mahmoud Maleki Najafabadi, 38 years old, a lorry driver, was “the father of one child.” The source writes: “His young daughter, Bahar, wished that the first person to hear her read aloud would be her father. A wish that was fulfilled at his grave after Mahmoud was killed.” On his gravestone they have written: “Bahar's dear dad.” Omid Ghasemi Nafchi, 37 years old, “father of a five-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son,” was killed on 19 Dey by a military bullet to the heart and was buried in Shahrekord.
Others
Reza Tahmasbi, 35 years old, unmarried, was targeted from above at 10 pm on 18 Dey in front of the Basij building in Yazdanshahr; the permit for his burial was given 9 days later. Vahid Shahrashoub had an ice cream shop near the cemetery of Najafabad. According to the source, he protested against the bodies of those killed being carried away in a rubbish truck, and witnesses said they shot him in the head and threw his body into that same vehicle. Mohammadmahdi Jafari, 22 years old, had a blind father; the source writes that this justice-seeking father lost his life from “the grief of being apart from his son.”
Sources and incompleteness
These 35 names are not all of those killed in Najafabad; the real number is higher, and the statements of witnesses about several bodies being buried together at night show that not all the names are yet known. We have included only names that have a source. The sources of this page are HRANA / Human Rights Activists in Iran with 30 cases, Iran International with 24, iranhrs.org with 14, Iran International with 13, iranintl.com with 8, Persian Wikipedia, the Iran Human Rights Society and VOA Persian with 3 each, and Amnesty International with 2 cases; 2 names also appear in the list of the Office of the Presidency dated 12 Bahman 1404. If you knew one of these 35 people, send us your memory or correction.
