This page keeps the memory of 20 people of Saravan, a city in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan. The first date on this list is 7 Khordad 1393 and the last 27 Khordad 1405. The list for Saravan is short, but the variety of fates in it is striking: 15 people were executed, 2 people were killed by government forces outside the protests, 2 people were killed in protests and one person lost their life in custody.
Years and days
The names from Saravan are spread over various years. The year 1401 with 6 names and the year 1393 with 5 names have the largest share. After that come 2 names in 1397, 2 names in 1400, and one name in each of the years 1396, 1402, 1403, 1404 and 1405. Two days on this list have three names each: 7 Khordad 1393, with which the list begins, and 19 Azar 1401. The day 16 Mordad 1393 also has two names. That is, in the year 1393 most of the names from Saravan were recorded on two days; days on which several people were hanged together or gave their lives.
The age range on this page is very wide: the youngest person was 8 years old and the oldest 65. The median age is 35 years. 2 of these 20 people were under 18. The sources have clearly written of 4 people that they were women; that is, one fifth of this list.
Farzad Mollazehi
The only person on this page of whom we have details is Farzad Mollazehi. He was “a 15-year-old adolescent” and “son of Nasrollah,” and the source writes that he was “resident in Saravan.” He was killed by government forces outside the protests on 27 Khordad 1405; the last name on this page.
The source describes what happened after he was wounded: “After this adolescent was wounded, the forces present, despite the closeness of the scene to Iranmehr Hospital, prevented his immediate transfer to a medical centre and stopped citizens from approaching to help him.” A fifteen-year-old adolescent, a few steps away from a hospital, and people who were not allowed to reach him. Of his life, his school or his dreams, our sources have said nothing; we know only his father's name and his age.
Nineteen other names
For the nineteen other people from Saravan, the sources have recorded nothing but a name, a date and sometimes an age. We do not know who the eight-year-old child on this list was and how the child lost their life. We do not know what lives the four women had whom the sources have named. We do not know whom the fifteen people executed in this city left behind. This silence is in itself part of the story of Saravan: news from this city is published briefly and late, and often contains nothing but a name. The charge attributed to those executed is what the authorities or the sources have stated, not a verdict of guilt.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
These 20 names are not all of those from Saravan who lost their lives. The real number is very likely much higher, and the names of many were never published; this page contains only names that a source has reported. The sources of this page are the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center and the Iran Human Rights Society with 10 cases each, Haalvsh with 9 cases and one further case, Persian Wikipedia and English Wikipedia with 2 cases each, and Al Arabiya Farsi and iranhrs.org with one case each. Some entries have only one source and may contain errors in age or date.
If you knew one of these 20 people, if you live in Saravan or have news of the family of one of them, we ask you to send us a memory or a correction.
