This page keeps the memory of 28 people whose names are linked in our list with Shirvan; 23 of them are recorded in the province of North Khorasan. The list for Shirvan is above all a list of executions: 25 people were executed. One person was killed in protests, one person has been sentenced to death and one person faces a charge that carries the death penalty. The first date on this page is 16 Esfand 1390 and the last 23 Mehr 1405.
Years and days
The names from Shirvan are scattered over the years: one name in 1390, 2 names in 1396, 5 names in 1397, one name in 1398, 2 names in 1400, one name in 1401, 3 names in 1402, one name in 1403 and 2 names in 1404. But the year 1405, which has not yet ended, is with 8 names the year with the most names on this page. Two days have two executions each: 6 Bahman 1402 and 24 Khordad 1405. The days 16 Esfand 1390, 19 Mordad 1396 and 5 Shahrivar 1396 have one name each.
The ages range from 18 to 53 years, and the median is 37 years. Those executed in Shirvan were mostly middle-aged men who very probably left a family behind, although our sources have said nothing about the families of most of them. The sources have written of 2 people that they were women. No one under 18 is recorded on this page.
Hadi Abbasian
Hadi Abbasian is one of three names on this page with a description; a 38-year-old man who has been sentenced to death and is still alive. The source writes that he “during the protests of the ‘National Revolution’ had called on people to take part in the protests by publishing videos.” These sentences of his remain: “I am protesting, and I won't back down from what I say. But if something happens to me, you should know.” And elsewhere: “We are protesting, we are protesting against everything, and we stand by our words... I have no fear of anyone either.”
According to the source, “Abbasian was arrested on 23 Ordibehesht 1405 in the Farhangshahr area of Shirvan.” He “was tortured on the first day of his arrest and, after his physical condition deteriorated, was transferred to hospital.” The source adds that “since his arrest, Abbasian's family has not been allowed to visit him.” He “has been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Bojnurd.” The sentence the court has handed down is the court's sentence, not proof of guilt; and this page keeps his name so that his fate is not forgotten.
Twenty-five executed
Of the 25 people who were executed in Shirvan, our sources have recorded, for most of them, nothing but a name, a date and sometimes an age. About two people who were executed in Mehr 1405 we know a little more. Naser Parvaneh, 28 years old, was executed on 13 Mehr 1405; according to the source, he had earlier “served four years in prison over a fight.” Reza Rajabian, 23 years old, was executed on 23 Mehr 1405; according to the source, “at the time of the crime he had not even fully turned eighteen,” and he had been “kept in limbo in prison for five years.” Of the others we do not know what work they did, how many children they left behind, in which neighbourhood they lived. We do not know whether the two people who were executed together on 24 Khordad 1405 knew each other or not. The charge attributed to each of them is what the authorities or the sources have stated. Anyone who knows one of these names can give a life back to it.
Sources and the incompleteness of the list
These 28 names are not all of those who were executed or killed in Shirvan. The real number is higher, and many executions remained without names; Shirvan appears in our list only with names that a source has recorded. The sources of this page are the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center with 12 cases, Iran Human Rights with 7, the Iran Human Rights Society with 6, HRANA with 3 and one case, the Yarmahmoodi Think Tank with 3, Iran International and iranintl.com with 2 each, and the Kurdistan Human Rights Network with one case. Most of the entries for Shirvan rest on one or two reports.
If you knew one of these 28 people, or have recent news of the fate of Hadi Abbasian, we ask you to send it to us.
